In terms of numbers, the North Korean military is the largest in the world. Much of its power lies in how people perceive it. National Geographic's David Guttenfelder has the rare credentials of being a Western photographer known as the Hermit Kingdom. His mobility in the country is often restricted, but not as much as you might think, especially when it comes to the military.

"You see them everywhere, they're not just defense of the state, they're part of North Korea's overall identity," he said. Soldiers work on development projects, build infrastructure, run the country, and make life in Pyongyang run smoothly. Guttenfelder's entries included invitations to perform at the annual Mass Games, as well as choreographed military displays of shambling soldiers and cannons on parades. Everyone at the event has a role to play, including the audience, who use coloring flip books to create magnificent mosaics in the stands. These images are often tributes to national leaders or the military.

A photo that has been circulating on social media for years has resurfaced on Facebook and people are still believing it to be real.

The images, shared on July 31, depict at least eight men in embellished military uniforms. They have medals pinned to their jackets, sleeves and trousers.

But that image has changed. The original image showed men in uniform with numerous medals pinned to their jackets, but none on their sleeves or trousers.

Something hints that the image has been changed. First of all, the medal pinned to the trousers was copied and pasted from the medal pinned to the lower right corner of the men's jacket.

The medals and their positions on the arms of the last four are exactly the same.

The unaltered image has been online since it was shared on a Russian blog in 2005. USA TODAY has not been able to locate the original image posted by the unauthorized entity, but similar photos depict service members with their medals pinned only to their uniform jackets. .

Back in 2013, USA TODAY found altered versions shared on Reddit, Twitter, Know Your Meme and an independent website that described itself as liberal.

Based on our research, we believe this image, which purports to show a North Korean military general with medals pinned to his uniform jacket, sleeves, and trousers, has been doctored. USA TODAY was unable to locate an official image, but the original version of the image shows the man wearing a jacket instead of sleeves and pants. Similar military photos show soldiers with nearly identical medals on their jackets. Images shared on social media are often shared on comedy sites.
