Famous artists, idols for actors, rappers for producers, all put their artistic careers on hold as they prepare for the worst case scenario - war. Everyone in the South Korean music industry is careful to ensure that this absence is as damaging to their careers as possible. However, Hong Da Bin used this time to become an artist. "I developed an interest in writing during that time and I continued to do so after my discharge — it eventually turned into a natural passion for music," he told i-D.
These days, he's known as DPR Live, a musical force to be reckoned with In part, this is due to his impeccable writing and rapping talent, and the DPR crew, a creative collective that manages him and all of his music and visuals produces. Originally from the city of Pocheon, the 25-year-old up-and-coming rapper and the DPR team (which stands for Dream Perfect Regime) have been working together since the beginning, when they met each other at coffee places or karaoke rooms. The Seoul-based crew create some of the most hallucinatory and sophisticated music videos you'll see coming out of South Korea - no easy feat when you look at today's production quality - combining their talent for visuals with high impact from their leading artist Refined sounds of R&B and rap.

With sold out shows, and outstanding collaborations with royalty from the Korean rap and hip-hop scene, gone are the days when DPR LIVE was a new face in the South Korean music industry. The past few years have seen her reputation grow rapidly with the release of her stunning debut album Coming to You Live in 2017, follow up EP Her, her performance at this year's SXSW, and now her upcoming world tour kicking off next week in Vancouver. , Canada. We spoke to DPR Live about the dreams he believes in so passionately, the importance of family, not caring about the charts, and what we can expect from his first North American tour.
Ukraine: Can Russia Still Win The War?
Appearing on Yung Freestyle was a turning point in your career. How has your style changed since then? It was truly a surreal moment. Eung Freestyle was a passion project we embarked on, and seeing the feedback has definitely fueled my desire as an artist and member of the DPR collective. I believe this project really pushed me to start exploring my own artist career. 2017's Coming to You Live was an impressive debut for a new artist, how long did you and the DPR team work on it? The team and I spent, I would say, a solid year preparing that album. We took our time with each song because it was the intro for us, so we really made sure to give it our best effort. For the collaboration, the team and I just envisioned who would fit the general feel of the song and went from there. Fortunately, all the artists we wanted to work with believed in the vision and really, the rest is history.
DPR Collective is a very effective creative machine live shows, how did you meet each other? It's a really long story, to be honest, but just to give a short, sweet summary - DPR IAN and I go way back. We met a long time ago in Korea and have been friends ever since. Fast forward a few years, IAN and REM met and we became the new trio. From there, the rest of the members slowly came on board - Cream was one of the last members to officially be part of our team. I can honestly say that everyone on this team is my family, and I'm sure they will say the same. We eat together, work together, party together and do it again every day. But, I wouldn't have it any other way. Through highs and lows these will be my brothers and always will be.
Why do you think DPR is so different from the South Korean music industry? In my opinion, I really think it comes from our teamwork and the collective passion we all share. For us it is not really a 'business'. Yes, we want to be successful and all that, but more than that, we want to do anything and everything we can think of to the highest standard. If it was only for money or fame, maybe we would have gone about things really differently. However, I think it's more about history - the legacy we can create with all our efforts. This is the dream.
You had a performance at SXSW earlier this year, and now you're on a solo tour in the US, what can American audiences expect from your show? SXSW is wild, and for it to be my first show in the US, I'm so excited to perform on that stage. Now that my solo US tour is right around the corner, I can honestly say that I have a lot more that I'm going to do this time because it's our show. We are in complete control, and so I want to give my best to the fans. Because every person is an extension of my family, and that alone deserves more appreciation than just a 'live performance'. For all members in attendance, just know, we have a lot in store to make it an unforgettable experience As REM said before, it won't just be a show, it's a family reunion.
The Town Where Tourists Can Watch Fake Military Training
In general, success in the music industry is measured by how well you do on the US charts, as an Asian R&B and Rap artist, do you feel pressure to break into the US music market? No, I think the right mindset kills your creativity/inspiration as an artist. Always pushing yourself to make it into the charts or get millions of views - I think it's a waste of effort and time. I would rather make sure I satisfy my fans - because they are the most important. I remember when we first started and we got hundreds of thousands of views. Always being grateful and appreciative of where you are right now - that's the mindset I'm working on these days. I just want to live in the now and pass it on to those I care about. The rest will follow - at least I believe so. How do you want to end 2018? Well, I'll be on tour for about two or three months - basically until the end of this year - so I hope I can give my best in every city. I also hope to be physically and mentally healthy.
